It’s happening state by state and school by school, and the numbers don’t lie. Girls high school flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the country right now, and it’s only gaining momentum.
NFL Investment Is Driving Real Growth
This week, the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armour announced an expanded partnership to bring 27 new girls flag football programs to Baltimore County and St. Mary’s County public schools starting this fall.
That pushes Maryland to 132 high schools with girls flag football programs statewide.
The Ravens have invested over $1 million into the initiative, with each participating school receiving funding along with custom uniforms. At this point, full state sanctioning in Maryland feels less like a question and more like the next step.
Ohio Sets the Standard
In Ohio, the Cleveland Browns are already showing what that next step looks like.
The 2026 season marks a major milestone. 120 schools are competing across four conferences, and for the first time, there will be a fully sanctioned state championship.
Ohio High School Athletic Association made it official, naming girls flag football a championship sport and making Ohio the 17th state to do so.
The title game is set for May 16 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
Five years ago, this program started with just six schools. Now it’s over 100 and still growing.
Georgia Keeps Building
Georgia continues to push things forward as well.
The Atlanta Falcons, through the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, are funding 27 new high school programs this year.
Programs like Statesboro STEAM Academy are stepping onto the field for the first time in 2026, adding to a system that already has some of the strongest participation numbers in the country.
The Bigger Picture
The trend is pretty clear.
NFL franchises are putting real money behind girls flag football, and schools are responding fast.
This isn’t a niche sport anymore. It’s becoming part of the standard high school athletics landscape.
For female athletes who grew up watching football without a real way to play it competitively, that’s changing quickly.
Flag football brings the speed, the strategy, and the competition of the game without the tackle, and it’s opening doors to college showcases, scholarship opportunities, and long-term development.
With the 2028 Summer Olympics bringing flag football to the global stage, the pipeline from high school to elite competition is starting to take shape in a real way.
What This Means for Players, Coaches, and Families
If your school or team is building something this season, this is the time to take it seriously.
More programs mean more competition, and that raises the standard across the board.
Having the right setup matters. From flags to jerseys to full team gear, the details start to show when the level of play improves.
Check out what’s available at GoTeamSports. It’s gear built for teams that are trying to compete, not just participate.
Because where this sport is headed, it’s only getting bigger.
Something’s happening on high school fields across the country, and it’s not under Friday night lights.
Girls’ flag football is blowing up. Not slowly. Not quietly. It’s moving fast, and if you’ve been anywhere near youth or high school sports lately, you’ve probably felt it already.
From 3 States to 17… Real Quick
Three years ago, only a handful of states took girls’ flag football seriously at the high school level.
Now, seventeen states have officially sanctioned it, and that number is still climbing.
The National Federation of State High School Associations reports nearly 69,000 girls played flag football during the 2024–25 school year across more than 2,700 schools. That’s over a 30% jump in just one year.
That’s not normal growth. That’s what it looks like when a sport catches fire.
Ohio Just Raised the Bar
Ohio High School Athletic Association made it official in July 2025. Girls’ flag football is now a sanctioned state championship sport.
And they didn’t ease into it.
The Cleveland Browns helped spark the movement back in 2021 with just six schools. Fast forward to 2026, and that number has jumped to 120 schools, with dozens more joining this season alone.
Now the big moment. The first official state championship is set for May 16 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Not a bad place to make history.
College Is Now in Play
This is where things really shift.
In January 2026, the National Collegiate Athletic Association named women’s flag football an Emerging Sport for Women. That might sound like a formality, but it changes everything.
It means colleges are starting to build programs. It means scholarships are coming. And it finally gives high school players a real answer when they ask if they can take this further.
Look around and you can see the momentum building.
Georgia already has 300 schools playing. Florida just saw a 40 percent jump in teams. Minnesota’s program crossed 100 schools. North Dakota is just getting started.
This isn’t isolated anymore. It’s everywhere.
Why This Matters Right Now
If you’ve got a daughter, niece, or player in your program, this isn’t something to watch from the sidelines.
This is the window.
The girls playing right now are the first ones through the door. They’re the ones who will land on those first college rosters as programs come online.
So yes, reps matter more. Development matters more.
And having the right gear matters too.
Whether she’s running routes, locking someone up on defense, or taking her first snaps in a real varsity game, she needs equipment that’s built for it.
Check out what’s new at GoTeamSports. Flags, jerseys, and gear made for players who are out there to compete.
The game is growing fast.
Make sure she’s ready for it.

Flag football has been building momentum for years, but the last two weeks may have changed everything. On March 30, 2026, the NFL officially announced it is launching professional flag football leagues, one for men and one for women. With a launch target of spring 2027. Backed by some of the biggest names in football history and a $32 million investment from all 32 NFL teams, this is the clearest signal yet that flag football isn't a fringe sport anymore. It's the future.
The announcement came through TMRW Sports, the NFL's developmental and operational partner for the new leagues. The star power behind the project reads like a Hall of Fame induction ceremony: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Larry Fitzgerald, Russell Wilson, and Bobby Wagner are all involved as backers and advisors. Troy Vincent Sr., the NFL's Executive Vice President of Football Operations, framed it perfectly: "A professional flag league completes the pathway for elite athletes to compete at every level of the game, from youth to high school and college, to the Olympic stage, and now professionally."
That Olympic stage reference is no throwaway line. Flag football is set to make its debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and Team USA has already been putting in work. Just two weeks ago at the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic in LA, the U.S. men's national team went a dominant 3-0 against two squads loaded with current and former NFL stars including Brady, Joe Burrow, and Jayden Daniels. Darrell "Housh" Doucette III was named tournament MVP, and the message was loud: elite flag football players have a skill set all their own, and they've earned their respect.
For anyone who coaches, plays, or watches youth flag football, this moment matters enormously. The NFL reports that approximately 4.1 million kids are now playing flag football in the United States. More than a 50% increase since 2020. High school programs exist in 39 states. Women's college flag football has exploded, with 100+ programs now active. The pathway from a youth league Saturday morning to the Olympic stage is real, and it's complete.
The question now isn't whether flag football has arrived. It has. The question is whether your team is ready. Gear up for the next chapter at www.goteamsports.com premium flag football equipment for every level of the game.

✅ Pop Flags vs. Triple Threat — What’s the Difference?
We offer both major flag types to match your format:
🔵 Pop Flags
- Our most popular option

Pop flags are the standard for 5v5 and tournament-style play. Our pop flags holds strong in motion, but pops clean when it’s time — so no dragging, no delays, just smooth gameplay.
🔴 Triple Threat Flags (Socket Style)
- Classic design with three permanently attached flags on a belt
- Perfect for recreational leagues, schools, or developmental programs
- Easier to manage for younger athletes or first-time players
We use heavy-duty webbing and reinforced flag stitching so your belts last longer, even after hundreds of reps.
